CRAVEN Family History
This interesting surname is of English locational origin from the district of Craven in the West Riding of Yorkshire. The placename is recorded as "Crave" in the Domesday Book of 1086, and probably derives from the Welsh "craf" meaning garlic. During the Middle Ages, when migration for the purpose of job seeking was becoming more common, people often took their former placename as a means of identification, thus resulting in a wide dispersal of the name. The surname was first recorded in the latter half of the 13th Century (see below), and Agnes de Craven and Johannes de Craven, appear in the Poll Tax Returns of Yorkshire, dated 1372)...Select Audience

Roberta
Make that the brothers Thomas and Robert. No way to edit!
Roberta
We are descendants of John's son Robert (from Ougham/Sligo) who emigrated to the US. I have been struggling with the ancestry due to the repetition of names. I had suspected the brothers John and Robert for John Sr. I had found their names on a record of rental farm property in Tobercurry. The Craven home still exists there, although it is in a shambles. They farmed in Tobercurry with the Shaws, who owned a home nearby.
Craven
Cravens Church of Ireland originally from Lancashire, Anglican: Eileen Mary Craven 1892-1953 (Doonanarrow, Mayo) mother Belinda Anne Taylor (of the Beresford Taylor, Sackville, Eastwood, Persse, Boleyn, Butler (Ormond Earls of Ireland), Plantagenet line) 1861-1947 - married Thomas Craven (Rusheens, Mayo 1852-1913); his father John Craven (1819-1892 Tobercurry/Ogham Sligo) married Elizabeth Shaw (Sligo 1839-1891); his father John Craven ca 1780 Ogham/Tobercurry Sligo and brothers Thomas, Robert Craven ca 1776 listed as Flax Growers Sligo 1796; John Craven 1798 claimant for loss of horse during rebellion. Oral family history and previous lost research says a CRAVEN (possibly a John) came from LANCASHIRE with a military regiment during the mid 1700s. Cannot trace the connection into Lancashire from that point. Any help would be tremendous - the missing piece.
