Bolger Family History
This name, with variant spellings Boulger, Boulsher, Bolgar, Bolger and Bulger, derives from the Old French "boulge", meaning a leather bag or wallet, plus the agent suffix "-ier" (one who does or works with something), and was originally given as an occupational name to a leather worker. Job-descriptive surnames originally denoted the actual occupation of the namebearer, and later became hereditary. The surname from this source is first recorded at the beginning of the 14th Century (see below). Recordings from London Church Registers include: the christening of William Bolger, an infant, on April 22nd 1593, at St.More Bolger family history

BOLGER
Hi, I just found this group and thought I'd join in the hope that I might further my family tree research and/or meet someone I may be related to. I was born a Bolger and am seeking any info on the Bolgers of Wexford. My great grandfather was Thomas Bolger (1862) possibly a sea captain, married Mary Murphy (1862). They had 7 children, John (1888), Dennis, my grandfather (1889), Joseph (1891), James (1892), Eliza (1894), Agnes (1898) and William (1899). I believe they may have lived on Michael street in Wexford around 1900. Dennis married Elizabeth Naomi Hall, Cambridgeshire, England and emigrated to Australia in the early 1920s, living mainly in the Port Adelaide area, with some years spent in Sydney, NSW. I'm keen to trace the Bolgers back further and am hoping someone on here may have a connection, so any info at all would be appreciated. Thanks.
